Wirtek is a member of the Danish IT Association. Every year, the IT Industry takes the temperature of the Danish IT industry by asking numbers of questions to its member companies.

The results from the IT Barometer 2025

More than one in two see the lack of skills as the biggest growth barrier for the IT industry in Denmark in 2025, which fits very well with the real and future demand.

Right now, it is estimated that there is an acute shortage of more than 7,000 IT specialists in the IT industry, and in some 15 years it is predicted b, IDA, the Danish Society of Engineers, that there will be a shortage of more than 20,000 IT people.

32% of the companies state that they have had to completely give up filling IT positions within the past 12 months, as there were no applicants for them at all.

39% of companies say that they had to postpone further development and innovation, while one in five had to say no to orders and tasks and give up entering new markets/segments because they could not find the right skills for it.

Rising costs and lack of capital challenge the industry

A lack of skills is not the only barrier to growth in the IT industry. Increased costs and a lack of capital are also major challenges for Danish IT companies. Almost one in three say that costs are helping to stop growth, while one in four say that the lack of capital is a challenge for the IT industry.

While rising costs have remained at the same level since 2023, the hunt for capital has become a more pronounced problem in 2025. Whereas in 2023 it was 20% of companies that saw the lack of capital as a barrier to growth, in 2025 it is now 25%.

Already in 2022, the first signs were seen that investments in Danish tech companies were taking a dive. Here, fintech investments fell from DKK 9.5 billion to DKK 3.1 billion. in just a year. And that decline does not seem to have stopped in 2024, which worries the IT industry.

Software developers are still in high demand

Competencies in software development and programming as well as security and compliance are still in high demand in the industry. In 2024, virtually all areas of competence experienced a decline compared to 2023. This year, the picture is a little different. Compared to 2024, it is possible to compare 11 out of 13 areas of competence with 2024, and for six areas there is a decrease, while for the other 5 there is increasing demand.

Particularly strong growth is in relation to analytics & data processing, where demand has increased from 17% in 2024 to 35% in 2025.

The use of AI has exploded

In 2024, Statistics Denmark reported that only 28% of Danish companies used artificial intelligence. In comparison, 96% of companies in the IT industry report that by 2025 they will use AI in their daily work.

Most people use AI in connection with information retrieval (92%) and text assistance (89%) But a large part of the IT industry (58%) also uses artificial intelligence when doing software development.
